
How to Care for Your Climbing Rope:
Your climbing rope is one of the most important pieces of equipment in your climbing system. Regular inspection and proper cleaning help extend its service life, maintain performance, and most importantly, help keep you safe while working at height. Whether you’re climbing every day or only a few times a month, making rope inspection and maintenance part of your routine is essential.
Inspect Before Every Climb
Before leaving the ground, run the entire length of your rope through your hands while visually inspecting it.
Look for:
- Cuts, nicks, or abrasions in the sheath
- Glazed or shiny areas caused by excessive heat or friction
- Flat spots or soft spots that may indicate core damage
- Areas where the rope has become unusually stiff
- Discoloration from chemicals, paint, fuel, or other contaminants
- Pulled fibers or excessive fuzzing
- Damage near splices or sewn terminations
If anything feels unusual while handling the rope, stop and inspect it more closely before climbing. No type of visual inspection can be guaranteed to determine accurately and precisely actual residual strength. When the fibers show wear in any given area, the rope should be retired. Both outer and inner rope fibers contribute to the strength of the rope. When either is worn, the rope is weakened. A heavily used rope will often become compact or hard which indicates reduced strength. The rope should be retired if this condition exists.
Perform a Detailed Inspection Regularly
In addition to your pre climb inspection, perform a more thorough inspection on a regular schedule based on how often the rope is used. Uncoil the rope and inspect it section by section in a clean, well lit area. Slowly feed the rope through your hands while gently bending it to feel for inconsistencies inside the core. Pay extra attention to areas that frequently pass through friction devices, cambium savers, pulleys, or mechanical devices, as these sections typically experience the most wear. No type of visual inspection can be guaranteed to determine accurately and precisely actual residual strength.
Service Life
The working life of your rope depends upon the type of rope, application, frequency and proper use. These are guidelines and approximate service life for average and proper use of product. Rock-N-Rescue’s guideline for rope or cord retirement in regards to shelf life is: Shelf life of any RNR Life Safety Product in unused condition stored properly in an environment not exposed to sunlight or hazardous materials will be a maximum of 10 years. Actual working life of a rope may be considerable shorter.
- Extensive Use: Up to one year
- Regular or Occasional Use: Up to 5 years
- Rarely Used: Up to 10 years
Avoid All Abrasive Conditions
Rope will severely damage if subjected to rough surfaces or sharp edges. Chocks, bits, winches, drums, and other surfaces must be kept in good condition and free of burrs and rust. Pulleys must be free to rotate and should be of proper size to avoid excessive wear. Restraining clamps and similar devices will damage and weaken the rope and should be used with extreme caution. Do not drag rope over rough ground. Dirt and grit picked up by the rope will work into the strands, cutting inner fibers.
Avoid Chemical Exposure
Rope is subject to damage by chemicals. Consult the manufacturer for specific
chemical exposure, such as solvents, acids, and alkalis. Consult the manufacturer for
recommendations when a rope will be used where chemical exposure can occur.
High Temperature Exposure
Nylon and Polyester fibers should not be exposed to high temperatures. If the rope will be exposed to elevated temperatures, it is the responsibility of the user to
establish adequate safety factors and procedures to address the loss of strength at elevated temperature.
Avoid Fire and Flame
Fire and flame impingement will seriously damage all synthetic rope. Damage may occur even is the temperature of the rope and fibers remains below the above listed temperatures.
Do Not Overload Rope
Sudden strains or shock loading can cause failure. Avoid sudden strains or shock loads which can exceed the breaking strength. Shock loading can cause failure of a rope normally strong enough to handle the load. Working loads are not applicable when rope is subject to significant dynamic loading. Whenever a load is picked up, stopped, moved, or swung, there is an increased force due to dynamic loading. The more rapidly or suddenly such actions occur, the greater this increased force will be. In extreme cases, the force put on the rope may be two, three, or even four times the normal load involved. Stored energy will cause the rope to recoil dangerously if it breaks. When a working load has been used to select a rope, the load must be handled slowly and smoothly to minimize dynamic effects and avoid exceeding the provision for them. If it is suspected that a rope has been shock loaded, it should be retired.
When Should a Rope Be Retired?
No climbing rope lasts forever. Retire your rope immediately if you discover:
- Cuts or sheath damage
- Core damage or broken fibers
- Heat damage or melted sections
- Chemical contamination
- Damage from heavy impact or shock loading
- Any condition that causes you to question the rope’s integrity
If you’re unsure whether a rope is still safe to use, it’s always best to retire it. The cost of replacing a rope is insignificant compared to the consequences of equipment failure.
